It was a girls' night out of the kind never seen before as women in a South American capital city went wild - on the orders of the mayor.

Music blared from almost every street corner as thousands of partying senoritas flocked to bars, clubs and restaurants where they celebrated until the early hours as the free drink flowed.

The men of the city, who would have loved to join in, were banned from even setting foot outside their homes.
