the Swiss capital is the centre of the country's engineering and manufacturing industry while still maintaining its medieval charm. The city's old town has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983. Last year Mercer ranked Bern as the second safest city to live in the world.
9. Copenhagen, Denmark
Health-conscious Copenhagen, the Danish capital, has made it into the top fifteen for its sixth consecutive year. Denmark is one of Europe's leading consumers and producers of organic food and around 35 percent of Copenhagen's population commute by bike every day, making full use of the city's 350 kilometres of cycle tracks.
8. Geneva, Switzerland
Nestled at the foot of the Swiss Alps, on the shores of Lake Geneva, Geneva has one of the most enviable metropolitan settings in the world. And it has the prices to prove it: the cost of living is the highest in western Europe. The expatriate hub is home to the world's most expensive private schools and its education system is globally respected.
7. Frankfurt, Germany
Over half of Frankfurt - the largest financial centre in continental Europe - is composed of open green spaces and waterways. As well as this, Mercer ranks the city as second best in the world for its infrastructure, just behind Singapore. No wonder it's retained its place in the top ten for another year.
6. Dusseldorf, Germany
Another showing in the top ten for Germany, supercool Dusseldorf is renowned for its fashion and trade fairs and, with more than 100 galleries, it's also Germany's art capital. Residents aren't afraid to splash their cash either - local media reported this year that the city has more millionaires than any other city in Germany
5. Vancouver, Canada
The only Canadian and North American city to make it into this year's top ten, Vancouver has one of the mildest climates in Canada, as well as being its greenest city - both in terms of verdure and carbon footprint. It's also lucky enough to be surrounded by water and snowy mountains.
4. Munich, Germany
Famous around the world for its annual Oktoberfest (pictured), Munich is also one of Germany's key economic centres. Engineering firm Siemens and insurer Allianz are both based there. It ties with Frankfurt for having the world's second best infrastructure, according to Mercer.
3. Auckland, New Zealand
New Zealand's biggest city, Auckland has an enviable natural setting - nestled between two harbours, with 11 extinct volcanoes and numerous islands close to hand. No surprise that it's the city with the world's largest boat ownership per person. It's also home to New Zealand's best-educated people, with nearly 37 percent of its working population holding a bachelor's degree or higher

Toronto ranks number 2 in the world as a city of opportunity, according to a new report from PriceWaterhouseCoopers.

Straight in at number one for the third year running: Vienna! The architecturally splendid Austrian capital is known as the City of Music for its musical legacy, and as the City of Dreams, due to it being the home of Sigmund Freud. It's also host to many major international organizations, including the United Nations and OPEC.
